Action Comics #276 May 1961 (The War Between Supergirl and the Supermen Emergency Squad!)

Why is Supergirl being attacked by a group of mini-Supermen? Will you be disappointed that the cover is a bit misleading?

The issue starts with Clark attending the death watch (creeeeepy) of the well-loved philanthropist John Kiley. In private Mr. Kiley admits to Clark that he is a huge Superman fan and that his investigations point to Clark being Superman. Superman decides that since Mr. Kiley is about to die that it would be OK to reveal his secret identity to him. Mr. Kiley then dies and Clark leaves feeling super-swell that he make his last few moments very happy. Unfortunately it turns out that Kiley faked his own death and that he’s really the leader of the Anti-Superman Gang. All his good deeds were a cover for his criminal enterprises and now that he knows Superman’s secret identity he can plan his demise.

The Anti-Superman Gang (or ASG as I will refer to them from now on) tricks Clark into entering a cave which they then cause to collapse. Clark is stuck inside with a big chunk of Kryptonite that is slowly killing him. Clark signals for his robots to come save him but the ASG has planned ahead for that and uses *insert lame electronic jargon* to disable them.

Clark then switches to plan B, which is to have the Supermen Emergency Squad (SEQ, I’m lazy) contact Supergirl. Why Superman can’t just contact Supergirl directly is beyond me. Another good question is why the members of the SEQ have to all dress like Superman. It does work to Superman’s benefit in this issue but how is it helpful under any other circumstances? Is someone going to confuse a gang of mini-Supermen for the real deal? Supergirl reaches his cousin in time and coats the Kryptonite with lead spray. With the situation now under control Superman decides to play a prank on the ASG.

Superman makes Kiley believe that he was hallucinating due to the ‘near-death drug’ when he saw Clark reveal himself to be Superman. Superman, Supergirl and the SEQ then put on a show for the ASG that makes them think that they were all exposed to the drug and that they can’t believe anything they’ve seen or heard for the last couple of days. Superman then puts the confused crooks under arrest.
