Action Comics #285 Feb. 1962 :: The World’s Greatest Heroine! (part 1)

After years of being Superman’s ‘secret weapon’ Supergirl is revealed to the world!

After years of forcing Supergirl to operate in secrecy, and to live in an orphanage lest foster parents find out about her secret identity, Superman decides it’s finally time to reveal her existence to the world. The first people told are Linda’s foster parents: Fred and Edna Danvers. I don’t understand why Superman didn’t allow Supergirl to be adopted. Think of the experiences Linda missed out on by not having foster parents. The Danvers turned out to be good people that can be trusted with her secret, she could have lived with them (or another family) for years. Superman had the benefit of the Kent’s love and nurture but he kept that benefit from Linda.

Superman then cuts into all television transmissions, without asking permission, to deliver his ‘debut’ speech. If he did that during one of my favorite TV shows I’d instantly hate him AND Supergirl. Afterward the two super-cousins fly around the world receiving heartfelt congratulations and warm greetings from everyone (well, not everyone) including President John F. Kennedy.

Warm greetings even arrive from other planets and from the bottled city of Kandor. Kara has finally gotten what she always wished for. She has a loving foster family and the world now knows of the existence of Supergirl. How long can this happiness last?
