Action Comics #302 July 1963 :: The Day Super-Horse Went Wild

I swear, if I have to review just one more Comet the Super-Horse issue….aw, crap!

This issue begins with employees of a SeaWorld-like park deciding to capture some mermaids (and mermen) for a new exhibit. This is, of course, illegal and they are stopped by Supergirl. It turns out that the two would-be fishermen were under the mind-control of Vostar, an evil merman scientist. Vostar used the two mind-controlled men to capture Lori Lemaris and Jerro who are trying to hunt him down. Now he’s cheesed at Supergirl and decides to get revenge on her.

Vostar first exposes Supergirl to Kryptonite but Comet, who is not Kryptonian, saves her life. Vostar then uses his mind-control helmet to take control of Comet and cause him to wreak havoc. The one thing that ends Comet’s destruction is a comet flying through the Solar system. This turns Comet into a human and confuses the crap out of Vostar.

Comet, or Biron as he is know as a human, is in a bind: he wants to tell Supergirl who is really behind his evil actions but he wants to keep his transformation secret. Biron concocts a plan where he impersonates a fortune teller and then drops some not-so-subtle hints as to whom she should be looking for. The plans works (hey, it’s a damn comic) and Supergirl takes Vostar into custody. She then uses Vostar’s mind-control helmet to release Comet, who is a horse again, from Vostar’s influence.

On my patented Supergirl Wink © scale this issue gets:

4 Winks.
