Action Comics #256 Sept. 1959

A change of pace this week, instead of a Legion comic I’ll be ripping on a classic Supergirl tale.

How will Linda keep her Supergirl identity a secret with a fellow resident at the orphanage actively trying to expose it?

Life isn’t easy for Linda Lee. She wants to use her super-powers to help people but Superman has forbidden her from revealing her existence. Of course, Superman didn’t help by making her live in a building full of potential eyewitnesses. One fellow orphan is being particularly curious, the aptly named Dick Wilson. Dick has put two and two together and come to the logical conclusion that it equals five Linda is Supergirl. What is the great evidence Dick has that Linda is Supergirl? 1) He saw a flying girl and Linda is also a girl. 2) Dick saw an unfinished writing assignment on Linda’s desk but then Linda turned in a finished paper moments later. He’s lucky Linda didn’t rip him a new one for invading her privacy and entering her empty room. Sure, he walked in to pick up some papers the wind had blown off her desk, not to snoop around and look for evidence of a secret identity. Dick then tries to trick Linda into exposing her super-powers but Linda outwits Mr. Wilson at every turn.

At this point the writer (Otto Binder, god rest his soul) ran out of ideas and said: “Fuck it kids, figure out yourself how Supergirl combined her powers to drill out the dumbbell”.

Superman saves the day by creating a Supergirl robot that takes the attention off of Linda. Superman used his super-voyeur powers to keep an eye on Supergirl (ew). He saw the problems Linda was having with Dick and constructed the Supergirl robot to help her out.
