Adventure Comics #304 Jan. 1963

It’s a big day for the Legion, today they pick a new Legion leader! But wait, what secrets is Saturn Girl keeping from her super-pals?

This issue starts right before the vote with Saturn Girl finding a crystalline capsule outside the Legion Clubhouse. A message contained inside mentions Zaryan the Conqueror (a villain, of course). Saturn Girl destroys the capsule before her fellow Legionnaires arrive. Imra wins the vote unanimously because she used her super thought-casting powers to force the Legionnaires to vote for her.

Immediately after winning Imra starts acting like a dictator. She ‘tests’ the Legionnaire’s abilities and when they fail, which they all do, she forbids them from using their powers. Secretly Imra used a rare metal to duplicate her fellow Legionnaire’s powers. At this point rule number one of my Grand Unifying Theory of LoSH Asshole Behavior™ applies. Imra then ‘grounds’ the other Legionnaires and then flies off into space alone.

After Imra flies off Lightning Lad figures out what’s really happening. Inside the crystalline capsule was a message from aliens who had created a computer which can see future events. The computer predicted that one Legionnaire will die while fighting Zaryan the Conqueror and his cohorts. Saturn Girl decided that she alone would take on the super-villains thereby sacrificing herself but saving the lives of her friends. Lightning Lad reached the villain’s space ship before Imra and is struck and mortally wounded by a freeze-ray, thus fulfilling the super-computer’s ‘prophesy’.

This last part of the story sounds very much like rules 2(b) and 3 of my Grand Unifying Theory of LoSH Asshole Behavior™. Imra was trying to protect her teammates by acting like a jerk-ette, ostrasizing her friends and then flying off to face the danger alone. Although Saturn Girl said she was pretending to be a tyrant you can tell she took pleasure in running her friends through the wringer. If you want an example of Imra’s true feelings check out how she got the Legionnaires to wear the rare metal which duplicated their powers: she made medallions with her face on them! Yup, Saturn Girl enjoyed every minute of it.

On my Legion Jerk © scale this issue gets a:

bitchy Imra
