Adventure Comics #316 Jan. 1964

Space raiders are stealing raw materials in order to create a super-weapon. While looking through mug shots the Legionnaires stumble upon the fact that Ultra Boy is really an escaped convict. The Legionnaires feel betrayed by one of their own!

This issue employs two Legion story clichés. The first one is Ultra-Boy pretending to be evil in order to help out his teammates. Pretending to be a jerk just so happens to be part 2(b) of my Grand Unifying Theory of LoSH Asshole Behavior™. Ultra Boy does a great job at acting like a crook too.

Check out how he almost pretend knocks over a building.

The second cliché is how quickly the Legionnaires turn on one another. They find out Ultra Boy was in jail for stealing and that he escaped. I’m not saying this should be ignored but c’mon, the Legionnaires overreact. It’s like they’re looking for any excuse to turn on each other. There could have been mitigating circumstances for Ultra Boy’s crimes. Not listening and just reacting really shows the immaturity of the Legionnaires.

And they make a dramatic show of ejecting him from the Legion.

On my Legion Jerk © scale this issue gets a:

Ultra Jerks

This issue is post-jet packs but pre-flight rings.

Flight belts!

HA HA! I AM BRAINIAC 5! BOW BEFORE ME!

I will not acknowledge the ‘Proty’s mind in Garth’s body’ storyline. Zero Hour super-erased that.

And it better not appear in the retroboot version!
